Venta la Duquesa to Alcalá los Gazules and back.

Another away day and a new ride including places we had been before. We set off towards the A380 service road and then took the track sign posted San José de Valle, the off road down hill track was testing in parts after the heavy rain. We came out onto the Paterna/Alcalá los Gazules road and continued on this undulating road with beautiful scenery for about 10km and then made our way up to Alcalá Los Gazules via a steady winding climb for a well earned coffee. After coffee we built up a good pace on the long downhill to pick up the A380 service road; we continued towards Sanctuario los Santos and then left via an off road track to take us back onto the A380 service road. The track was mainly good apart from one section at the bottom that was very wet and muddy, with the help of a goat herder we muddled our way through to the end. We then continued up the hill and retraced our way back to La Duquesa. The beer stop was at Los Navaros..

2  Start Points - Venta La Raya and Hotel Antonio at Colorado

From the 1st start point at Venta La Raya we proceeded by road to EL Colorado and Hotel Antonio to meet the others who were waiting to start from there. After a quick coffee because we were early!!, we then rode to the outskirts of Conil to take the road to El Palmar. It's a nice time of year to visit El Palmar as all the holidaymakers have gone and the place has a much more relaxed feel about it. However it wasn't yet time for another coffee so we continued on towards Zahora and took a turn towards the village of San Ambrosio in the La Breña Parque Natural. Unfortunately our usual coffee stop at the Hotel Paloma was closed for winter so we continued on along a lovely track down taking coffee at Outskirts of Barbate. The way back was along the Barbate road onto La Barca and the N340 back to El Colorado. This part of the ride was a bit of a struggle as we were against the wind all the way back to Hotel Antonio.

Sun 2nd NovThe ride started from El Puerto Santa Maria, a virgin ride to Sanlucar. We set off from El Puerto along the coast entering Rota and then searching out the Via Verde route, the US naval base was extensive and difficult to circumnavigate, we witnessed large planes taking off and then continued. We were lucky to meet a couple of Spanish riders who guided us to the route to Sanlucar, there were choices of routes, we chose to take the route to Sanlucar. The route was relatively flat but had it's own beauty of cotton fields just harvested and loaded on lorries for processing, there were also extensive grape vines set in acres of chalk soil. Venta's were few and far between, so we had completed 50km and on our way back  before we stopped at a very welcoming Venta near Chipiona for a well earned beer, coffee and chips. After leaving the Venta we soon picked up the via verde route taking us back to El Puerto. At the end of the via verde we picked up the cycle track leading us back to the port area of El Puerto and a final beer at the finish. 91kmGPX file

Sun 19th OctStarting from Casa Blas, we headed out to the cañada at the back of Pago and cycled towards Los Naveros before turning left up another track eventually meeting the Medina road. Quite a windy day today and we were heading into it all the way to Medina. Just after the roundabout before the hill up to the town we were going to go for coffee At the Venta on the left of the main road, but it was packed out, so we went across the road and found a new venue hidden away off the main road, much better. Refreshed we headed back along the road to Chiclana but took a detour through Berrueco and than back along the cañada to the Peña bar in Pago for drinks and tapas.47kmGPX file

Sun 12th OctBecause of the possibility of rain today, we decided on a local ride where we could pop intom a venta if we go caught in a heavy shower. So starting from Casa Blas we headed through town and onto the tracks through the marismas to old Sancti Petri. After a circuit of the old port we headed off to Barrosa beach. Several diversions later, due to roads being closed for a community fun run we reached the venta on the beach for coffee. Suitably refreshed we headed back to Pago with some  of us taking the tracks through the woods and others preferring to go back by road. Finishing up at Venta Angelin for drinks. after worrying about the rain we never had any all day after all.35kmNo GPS Data or map available for this ride

Starting at Venta Reya,we set off towards Los Naveros but just after the first group of houses Andy suggested we tried out a track to our right, this track took us to the track we had intended using, taking us to the village of Los Naveros, from then on the route changed as we continued to Conil a little earlier than first planned. After entering Conil we took our coffee stop at a Venta/restaurant on the edge of the trading estate. Sun 1st JunAn away day with a difference -  Club ciclista Conil, 111 Cicloturista Villa de Conil

The day took us on a ride with approximately 300 well accomplished cyclists. The route was mainly off road through virgin territory, we meandered through the town of Conil and then set off across the bridge in the direction of El Palmar, a seemingly easy route but then the cross country diversion took us through none authorised fields winding up and twisting in the direction of Los Naveros, the group stops were a welcome relief from the arduous terrain; we then took trails that took us back to the more familiar area of El Colorado and Roche. Lunch was taken in El Colorado before the last assault, the competitive race section returning to Conil. Thunder storms added to the diversity of the tracks and turned sand into sludge. At the end there was a hot meal waiting for us and the presentation of the awards.
All in all a great day was had by all. - Click to view Photo's

Sun 23rd MarThe Magical Mystery Tour that was la vuelta del Paterna

Del, Brian, Alan, Barrie and Dianne met up for the big adventure. The wind was favourable the scenery stunning and hills a little challenging. The route took us from Paterna to Alcala de los Gazules, after a well earned coffee break at Venta Libre we continued on the undulating windy roads to the Venta El Boquete at San Jose del Valle, the route then took us on the Jerez road that had an independent cycle track, after a few km on this road we then took a left turn onto a cańada, after some searching we found the route to Barca de la Florida, the track was varied and beautiful to include a river; at the end of this track there was a lovely picnic area, unfortunately there was no time for relaxing as we had to pick up the road back to Paterna, at the junction we took the road to Torrecera and then from Torrecera we found the cut through to Paterna this road was 12km of more beautiful scenery, after 60km of cycling we enjoyed a welcome beer in the centre of the village of Paterna. Sun 16th FebLeaving from Casa Blas, through to Marquesado and then taking the track past the Cadiz football training ground to Barrio Jarana. After coffee there we made a rash decision to go off track and finished up having to negotiate two tunnels under the motorway and railway that were flooded and muddy. Quite a lot of cursing and swearing later we emerged on the track by the side of the railway to Puerto Real. afrer going through the town we crossed the Salinas near the university of Cadiz and on to Puerto de Santa Maria for another coffee break at Venta Juan Antonio. The return followed quite closely the outgoing leg except avoiding the dreaded tunnels. Quite an eventful ride given that we also suffered a broken chain which meant having to cut the ride short.72kmGPX file

Sun 9th FebThe Sunday ride took place on Monday 10th as the weather yesterday was inclement, this morning the wind was very strong so a decision was made to shelter as much as possible; we took the route to Conil Port by way of Virgin tracks and the shelter of trees where possible. The coffee stop at Conil Port proved to be a good decision as the view was spectacular sheltered from the wind we watched the white horses out to sea and the fishing boats sheltering in the harbour. The route back took us off road on the headland, again spectacular; we then investigated new side roads in Roche to find  some lovely views.
